Choosing a kennel or cattery
Many owners say that they will never leave their pet in a boarding kennels or cattery. However on occasions situations do occur where you are unable to take your pet with you.
The options available to you are:-
(1) Your pet stays at home and you endeavour to arrange for a friend to "pet sit". Agencies will also undertake this for you and look after your home at the same time.
(2) It may be possible for a friend to look after your pet in their own home while you are away.
(3) You use a boarding kennel or cattery. These are advertised in the yellow pages and local directories, although personal recommendation by a friend or neighbour is ideal. The local authority and your veterinary practice should be able to provide a list of licensed kennels and catteries in the area.
Boarding your pet for a trial period will allow you to see how he or she settles, and also to check out the establishment as well as the standard of care your pet receives. All kennels and catteries will insist on up-to-date documented vaccinations, and some may require vaccination against kennel cough for both dogs and cats. This indicates that the kennels are trying to maintain their premises as disease free as possible.
Also remember to discuss any medical problems or special dietary requirements that your pet may have.
Despite your fears, most pets settle into the boarding routine quickly and look forward to their holidays.
